Summer Sports Injuries: A kinesiologist can help!

Golf, baseball and tennis are a few of the most popular summer sports that all share some of the same injuries. A few of the most common injuries seen in the summer from these sports are shoulder injuries, tennis elbow and lower back strains.

Sprains & Strains

One of the most common sports injuries are sprains and strains. A sprain is an injury to the ligament, which is the tough band of tissue that connects bones to joints. A strain is an injury to the muscle fiber or tendons, these anchor muscles to bones. Any sudden movement can overload ligaments and tendons, which can result in a tear and inflammation. These types of injuries can often occur in the summer while playing sports because there are sudden and repetitive motions like swinging a golf club.

Shoulder Injuries & Tennis Elbow

The rotator cuff, which is made up of four shoulder muscles with tendons that run across the shoulder joint, give us control and power during a swing in any of the previously mentioned sports. If a tendon becomes pinched in the shoulder it can lead it tears in the rotator cuff tendons.

Tennis and golfer’s elbow happen when irritation and inflammation occur in the tendons of the elbow. The repetitive movement of the swing along with the shockwaves that travel up the arm can cause serious irritation.

Injuries can happen to anyone at any skill level, which is why it’s important to seek help from a kinesiologist if you are feeling pain from one of these injuries. Working with a kinesiologist can help you gain movement back, reduce pain and give you the mechanics to strengthen that part of your body.
